Chao Shao-an Student Exhibition Series 2

One of the most renowned painters of the Lingnan School, Professor Chao Shao-an also made a very significant contribution to art education by establishing the Lingnan Art Studio in Guangzhou in 1930 and later in Hong Kong in 1948. To study the ways in which stylistic features of the Lingnan School have been continued and innovations introduced by individual artists working in the traditions of the school, the Heritage Museum is currently running a Student Exhibition Series focusing on the works of artists who studied under Professor Chao. This time we look at Lam Wu Fui.

Born in 1945 in Jieyang county of Guangdong province, Lam Wu Fui studied Western painting and Chinese landscape painting in his early years before becoming a pupil of Professor Chao. Since holding his first solo exhibition in 1978 in Hong Kong, he has showcased his works at many events both at home and abroad. This exhibition features around 30 paintings with a variety of subjects ranging from fish, birds and other animals, through flowers, to landscapes. Lam is particularly adept at painting cranes set against snow-draped backdrops and forest scenes of a highly atmospheric mood. His excellent mastery of ink and brush allows him to render the fine fur of animals such as monkeys and cats, while at the same time capturing the spirit and movement of tigers, panthers, birds and fish.
