Yu Kai, famous Cantonese opera man mou sang (principal male role), was born to a family of Cantonese opera performers. By the age of four, Yu Kai had already started to learn from his parents the arts of Cantonese opera. He started his stage performance at the age of seven, performing in Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macau, gaining popularity among opera fans and earning himself the nickname "Yu Kai, the Gifted Child". Yu Kai had been invited to perform in Southeast Asia and America, bringing the arts of Cantonese Opera to overseas. He bade his official farewell to Cantonese opera in 1993.

In 2010, Yu Kai has generously donated over 2,000 items of his memorabilia to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. The collection provides the most comprehensive resource for the study of Yu Kai's achievements in Cantonese opera and the arts of man mou sang. The exhibition showcases his collection highlight, including costumes, stage props, librettos, photos and publicity materials, to feature his achievement in Cantonese Opera.
