In light of the latest development of the novel coronavirus and in response to HKSAR government's appeal on mininizing risks of virus infection and spreading in local community, it is decided that "The Story of Jao Tsung-i" symposium on 9 February 2020 (Sunday) has to be cancelled. For remembering Professor Jao Tsung-i, an extraordinary scholar who advocated ‘the integration of scholarship and art', Hong Kong Heritage Museum and Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole jointly organised "The Story of Jao Tsung-i" Symposium with the coming of the first anniversary of the deceased scholar. Moderator and guest speakers from local and abroad will share with the audience through reviewing his splendid life and achievements.

(I) Following the Footsteps of the Grand Master
The talk will highlight the life of Professor Jao Tsung-i, his enormous achievements and the underlying factors of his success. This hopefully would inspire our younger generation to succeed in their own career paths.

(II) The Art and the Study of the Guqin of Professor Jao Tsung-i
Professor Jao is renowned for being an expert of the guqin. He had written over ten articles on the subject; his views on the history and aesthetics of the qin can also be found in prefaces written for friends and students, as well as in his literary works and paintings. This talk gives an overview of his art and study of the qin, starting with a discussion on the newly discovered recording of him playing the piece, Saoshou wentian ('Seeking an answer from heaven, in frustration'), made in Switzerland in 1979.

(III) An Introduction on Hong Kong History by Professor Jao Tsung-i
Through the exploration of Professor Jao's research on Hong Kong history, including the ideology, content and methodology, the audience is enabled to have a general idea of Professor Jao's profound scholarship and his view of Chinese history built on the foundation of national culture.

(IV) The Friendship between Professor Jao Tsung-i and Hong Kong Painters
After moving to Hong Kong, Professor Jao dedicated himself to teaching and researching, but meanwhile, he established a close relationship with Hong Kong painters of different schools, such as Traditional School, Lingnan School and Western Influenced School, and created collaborative works with them. The stories behind their companionship are also an essential part of Hong Kong painting history.

Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Workshop
This programme is composed of a guided tour and an interactive workshop: at the beginning the instructor will take the participants to visit the exhibition to understand more about Professor Jao's life achievements in studies and arts with reference to his masterpieces. In the workshop, the instructor will demonstrate how to paint Professor Jao's representative artworks. Participants will be able to learn his painting style as well as the greatness of Chinese calligraphy and brush painting.
